Editing Philosophy

What does editing With me look like?

Simply put, I believe the job of an editor is to make the author sound like the best version of themselves as possible, without inserting any authorial voice of their own.

Ultimately, my goal is to provide my clients with the type of feedback they will find most helpful, and to otherwise stay in my lane. I am not an author, nor do I pretend to be one or play one on TV. A story is the direct product of an author's creative process, and my job is strictly to help the author make that story work for their readers and themselves. Sometimes clients want me to just point out any issues I see, and let them fix it. Others like suggestions, even if it's just as a jumping-off point for them.

I want edits to be enjoyable, not dreaded. I try to provide humor when possible, because I think that laughing makes a job go faster and better.

I want my clients to feel okay if they need to reschedule and do my best to provide maximum flexibility because, well, if the words don't come, there are no words. I don't want to edit anything the author doesn't feel is ready, because then no one is satisfied.

wHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR YOU?

If you decide to work with me, I have some basic questions that help me provide a turnaround time, and I always ask about style preferences. If you already have a style sheet, send it my way! I LOVE those things, and I want to do things in a way that fits into your world and style of writing. It's not up to me to change your world's rules or your narrative voice, and believe me, your readers will notice if I do.

Ideally, you can tell me about how you see your book's tone, the characters, and how it fits into the series (if applicable). That helps me know what sorts of words to suggest if something doesn't fit quite right, or think of something that will sound like you, but better. You can also tell me if you want my impressions inserted along with my editorial comments or not, and if so, expect a more colloquial tone from those. It should be like we're just friends chatting about a book we read.

I aim to make edits as smooth as possible, so I try to do as much in-line as I can. That means you click "Accept" or "Reject" rather than having to do a lot of reviewing comments and typing. If nothing else, I try to provide a starting point for you to expand on when reviewing. If you get more of the content/development edits, then I start sending paragraphs in the email dealing with larger areas of the MS.

I am always available for questions or follow-ups regarding your book! Seriously. I check my email on Christmas because... Honestly, I don't know why, but I do, so I'm reachable. I really value my relationships with my clients so I want to do everything I can to make sure you are happy with the result. If for any reason you aren't happy, all I ask is that you let me know and give me a chance to make it right.

About Me

I graduated with a B.A. in East Asian Studies, with an emphasis on Japanese Literature, and a Master of Library and Information Science, with a focus on archives and records management. I homeschool two kids who will either be awesome, terrifying, or both. I love tea, coffee, organization of all sorts, and traditional fae stories. I enjoy The Golden Girls, Nero Wolfe mysteries, and absolute trash TV. Once we're friends, we can talk about cilantro and black licorice, and how we feel about them.
